The Black Pledge Collective is proud to launch a venture designed to unite artists and arts workers of African descent prior to the end of the United Nations\u2019 Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024).<\/a> The Year of Black Performance<\/b><\/a> is a bold, groundbreaking initiative that showcases and celebrates the vibrant, diverse, and multidisciplinary essence of Black art performance in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The launch will take place during the Stratford Festival immediately following <\/span>Get That Hope\u2019s <\/b>2 p.m. performance <\/span>on Saturday, August 17, 2024 <\/b>at<\/span> the Studio Theatre. The play, which explores the personal and cultural experiences at the heart of a Jamaican-Canadian family\u2019s life and identity, is Black-directed, Black-led and Black-supported. It was created by Andrea Scott, an award-winning Canadian playwright, and is directed by Andr\u00e9 Sills, a multi-award-winning performer and Stratford Festival veteran.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Black Pledge Collective was formed in 2020 during the height of worldwide racial reckoning. Five theatre companies signed the pledge to affirm their commitment to address anti-Black racism within their organizations. 2b Theater Company (Halifax), Neworld Theatre (Vancouver), Nightwood Theatre (Toronto), Shakespeare in the Ruff (Toronto) and the Stratford Festival (Stratford) are founding signatories of the Black Pledge.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Year of Black Performance encompasses theatre, dance, opera, comedy and hybrid art forms, fostering a sustained effort to decolonize artistic disciplines while amplifying Black performances. The initiative, which will wrap in August 2025, will include a nationwide call for submissions for Black-led and Black-focused projects that\u00a0 will be made available on an interactive website designed to profile the variety of Black performance projects across Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Compelled to action by the 2020 uprisings following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and many others (now termed \u201cthe racial reckoning\u201d), The Black Pledge Collective (BPC) was created by a group of Black women theatre artists to hold arts organizations accountable for their commitments to combat anti-Black racism in live performance. Led by multi-award-winning artist and activist Sedina Fiati, the collective includes experienced professionals Georgia Grant, Janelle Cooper, Naomi Bain, Nikola Steer (aka Coco Framboise), Ren Niles, Tamara Jones, and Velvet Wells. The initiative calls on organizations to support Black artists by creating actionable anti-racism plans, and to build long-lasting relationships with Black communities. So far, five organizations\u20142b theatre, Neworld Theatre, Nightwood Theatre, Shakespeare in the Ruff and the Stratford Festival\u2014have signed the pledge.<\/span><\/p>

The Black Pledge Collective has led numerous workshops and panels across Canada, including sessions with the Stage Managing the Arts (SMArts), SPARC Rural Arts Network and the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance. In addition to fostering relationships with pledged organizations, the collective has formed strategic partnerships with Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA), Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and Choral Canada. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Pouss\u00e9 \u00e0 l’action par les soul\u00e8vements de 2020 qui ont suivi les meurtres de George Floyd, Breonna Taylor et bien d’autres (maintenant appel\u00e9s \u00ab la prise de conscience des questions li\u00e9es au racisme \u00bb), le Black Pledge Collective (BPC) a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par un groupe de femmes noires artistes de th\u00e9\u00e2tre afin de tenir les organisations artistiques responsables de leurs engagements \u00e0 lutter contre le racisme anti-Noir dans les spectacles des arts de la sc\u00e8ne. Dirig\u00e9 par l’artiste et activiste plusieurs fois prim\u00e9e Sedina Fiati, le collectif comprend les professionnel.le.s exp\u00e9riment\u00e9.e.s Georgia Grant, Janelle Cooper, Naomi Bain, Nikola Steer (alias Coco Framboise), Ren Niles, Tamara Jones et Velvet Wells. L’initiative invite les organisations \u00e0 soutenir les artistes noir.e.s en cr\u00e9ant des plans concrets de lutte contre le
racisme et \u00e0 \u00e9tablir des relations durables avec les communaut\u00e9s noires. \u00c0 ce jour, cinq organisations \u2013 2b Theatre, Neworld Theatre, Nightwood Theatre, Shakespeare in the Ruff et le Festival de Stratford \u2013 ont sign\u00e9 cet engagement.<\/p>

Le Black Pledge Collective a anim\u00e9 de nombreux ateliers et panels \u00e0 travers le Canada, notamment des sessions avec Stage Managing the Arts (SMArts), SPARC Rural Arts Network et la Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance. En plus de favoriser les relations avec
les organisations signataires, le collectif a form\u00e9 des partenariats strat\u00e9giques avec la Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA), l’Association professionnelle des th\u00e9\u00e2tres canadiens (PACT) et Choral Canada.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
