Jonathan Michel starts 2023 by making his Toronto headlining debut

Brooklyn, New York bassist brings Haitian inspired sounds, with some of Toronto’s favourite jazz artists by his side.

Jonathan Michel, a renowned bassist, composer, and producer based out of Brooklyn, New York is starting 2023 by headlining a show at the Jazz Bistro in Toronto.  A man of many genres, his musical background includes RnB, jazz and gospel. The common thread? A clear line between the Black cultural experience and his own Haitian roots.

Embracing a Haitian influence in his music

Jonathan is the proud son of Haitian immigrants. His love for music grew in the pews of his church and that influence continues with his artistic practice. In 2019, Jonathan was a resident artist taking part in Konèktif, an inter-generational project which brought together musical artists and Haitian community members of all ages to explore the roots of the Haitian community in East Flatbush through personal connection and experiences. Jonathan infuses his heritage into his performances, and at the Jazz Bistro he will be reimagining songs from his album, paying tribute to Haitian Independence day by putting his twist on classic Haitian music.

“Wherever I travel, I always have an ear out for some Haitian Creole or have an eye out for a Haitian flag. I absolutely look forward to exploring the Haitian-Toronto scene.”
– Jonathan Michel

Exploring the Black cultural experience and uplifting other Black artists

He has shared the stage with some of the best in jazz music: Billy Paul, Laurin Talese and Orrin Evans. In his Toronto headlining debut, he’ll be playing with Black music heavyweights on this side of the border: Joanna Majoko (vocalist), Joy Lapps (steel pan), Ewen Farncombe (piano), and Larnell Lewis (drums)
